Cambodian Iced Coffee

Brewed strong, poured over sweetened condensed milk instead of most of the milk, and finished over ice. Stronger, sweeter, creamier and smoother than an iced latte. Closer to a dessert than to a coffee.

It is not a variation on anything. It is how coffee is drunk in Cambodia, sold on every street corner through the hot season, and the condensed milk is not a flourish: it is what a country without refrigeration reached for instead of fresh milk, and never gave up.

Every other cafe in Daylesford can make you a flat white. This is the one worth walking in for.

What people say at the counter

A new cafe lives or dies on its first reviews. They decide whether someone driving up from Melbourne finds us at all. If the coffee was good this morning, thirty seconds of your time is worth more to us than anything else you could do.

Our story

The story behind Ream

Hi, I’m Siv, the person behind Ream Cafe. My journey with coffee began when I was 11 years old, in Cambodia. My uncle had opened a small coffee shop built into a tuk-tuk on the road to the airport, directly across from my school.

A year later, my uncle left for Japan to work, and the coffee shop was placed in my care. From then on, I would wake up at 5 in the morning, go to the market to buy ice, and open the shop by 6 before going to school.

When I was 14, I moved to Australia and began a completely new life. Over time, Daylesford became familiar. What began as a new place eventually became home. So when I decided to open a cafe of my own, I did not look anywhere else.

Ream comes from Preah Ream, the hero of the Reamker, one of Cambodia’s most treasured traditional stories. It carries values I hope this place can represent: love, loyalty, courage, duty and honour.

I love making coffee, but what I love most is getting to know the people who walk through the door. So when I ask how your morning is going, I am not just being polite. I genuinely want to know.
